Ganesh Sthapana
Ganesh Sthapana marks the joyful beginning of Ganeshotsav, the ten-day festival welcoming Lord Ganesha — the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and new beginnings — into our homes. This ritual is less about precision and more about the warmth, togetherness, and devotion a family brings to it.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 is on Monday, 14 September. Visarjan is on Anant Chaturdashi, Wednesday, 23 September.
The whole day is auspicious — there is no narrow window to catch. Pick a time when the family can be together and unhurried.
Some regional Panchangs differ by a day — worth a quick check with your local calendar.

- Set up a raised platform (chowki) covered with a clean red or yellow cloth for the idol.

- The North-East corner of the home is considered most auspicious for placement.

Step 1: Sankalp (Intention Setting)
What to do: This step formally declares your intention to the divine — it opens the ritual with a clear purpose. Sit facing east or north.
Perform "Sukhkarta Dukhharta" (traditional Marathi Ganesh aarti) or "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva" (widely known Hindi aarti), whichever your family knows best. Ring the bell while performing the aarti, and let all family members circle the diya together. Then the two below are sung in order: Sukhkarta Dukhharta, with everyone joining the "Jai dev jai dev" refrain after each verse, and Ghalin Lotangan, sung standing with hands folded.
When the aarti is finished, carry the plate to everyone present so each person can take the flame with both palms and touch them to their eyes. Then distribute the panchamrit — a spoon into each person's right palm, taken as teerth — and hand round the naivedya as prasad. The pooja is not finished until the prasad has gone round.
Dakshina is offered at the end of a pooja as a gesture of gratitude — traditionally to the purohit who guided it. This guide is free and stays free. If it helped, you are welcome to offer something; if not, that is completely fine.
Nothing is locked either way — the whole guide is already open.
- Modak (steamed or fried) — Lord Ganesha's favorite
- Ladoo (besan or motichoor)
- Coconut pieces mixed with jaggery
- Fruits — banana or other seasonal fruits
Performing Ganesh Sthapana with devotion is believed to invite the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, into the home — bringing harmony, removing hurdles in ongoing endeavors, and marking an auspicious start to any new venture. Families performing this together also strengthen their bond through shared devotion.
