Mistakes are fine
Nothing here has to be done perfectly. If a step is skipped, an item is missing, a word is mispronounced or the order comes out differently, the pooja is not spoiled and nothing bad follows from it. Worship done with care and good intent is complete. If you notice something mid-way, simply carry on from where you are.
Guidance, not authority
SaralPooja is a reference for performing pooja at home. It is not a substitute for a purohit, and it does not claim religious authority. Ritual practice differs by region, community, sampradaya and family, and more than one form of a vidhi can be correct at the same time. Where this guide and your family’s practice differ, follow your family.
The Sanskrit
The mantras, the Atharvashirsha and the aarti texts have been prepared with care. Different families and regions recite them a little differently, so if the version you grew up with differs from ours, yours is not wrong.
You do not have to get the pronunciation right for the pooja to count. Read at a pace that is comfortable, let the words you stumble over pass, and carry on. What is being offered is bhaav.
No promised outcome
Nothing here promises any particular result, worldly or spiritual. The falshruti section describes what tradition holds; it is not a claim by us about what will happen to you.
Safety
A pooja involves open flame, hot oil and camphor. Keep lit diyas away from cloth, curtains and children, never leave them unattended, and do not perform any part of a ritual in a way that puts anyone at risk. Fasting practices are a personal and medical decision; if you are pregnant, unwell or on medication, consult a doctor.
Photographs
Photographs and illustrations show one possible arrangement. They are representative, not prescriptive — nothing needs to look exactly like the picture.
